Welcome to Governor

Governor is a modern American restaurant nestled on the Brooklyn waterfront, created by the team behind Brooklyn Heights’ Colonie and DUMBO’s Gran Electrica. Partners Tamer Hamawi, Elise Rosenberg, Emelie Kihlstrom, and Bradford McDonald (executive chef and partner) offer an original menu with a focus on market-fresh, responsibly sourced and foraged ingredients.

Chef McDonald, formerly of Noma in Denmark and Per Se, showcases fresh, simple ingredients alongside creative culinary techniques, making the menu simultaneously familiar and progressive. His menu starts with house-made bread and butter churned daily in the kitchen, and dusted with a “salt” made from the rinds of Timberdoodle cheese. Other combinations of the familiar and esoteric include Beer Battered Blowfish Tails, and Roasted Pork Neck with Peaches, Elderflower, Nasturtium and Pork Jus.

And Governor’s cocktail program, directed by Hamawi, blurs the lines of kitchen and bar, incorporating seasonal and unexpected elements into beverages – like the Cool Hunt Club, with organic cucumber vodka, muddled gooseberries, fresh cucumber juice, agave thyme nectar, and lemon. The wine list, curated by Rosenberg, features an eclectic American and European list, with a focus on indigenous varietals, natural winemaking, sustainability, and a strong sense of place. The list features over 60 bottles at any given time.

The bi-level restaurant with 20-foot ceilings offers balcony seating that overlooks the first-floor dining room and oversized, original arched windows. The main floor features a vibrant live garden wall, inspired by Colonie, an open kitchen and a bar and lounge area. The restaurant is named after Robert Gair, nicknamed “Governor,” who invented corrugated cardboard and was instrumental in the development of DUMBO in the 1800s. As an homage, various themed portraits of Gair – from Michael Jackson and KISS to Monet and Van Gogh – are hung all along the wall.
